On Being Old and on your own.

I am 73 and my wife is 66. My sons and daughters are living at different locations, quite away from me. I and my wife live in our house at Indore. Some people, including my children, think that it is not wise to live by ourselves because we are old and may need help (medical, etc.) any time. Still we do not want to lose our freedom and our independence by becoming dependent on others. We continue to live on our own. Am I right? Please advise.

The question posed echos Milton's sentiments that it is better to reign in hell than serve in heaven. In this case, you do not serve in heaven but wait for the service. Personal emancipation and respect for each other's privacy have added to already existing problems of space, adjustment etc. The real question is of surrendering one's control over life. The short film Godhuli examines this issue without giving any definitive answers. Some viewers have responded that listening to others has indeed provided them with an insight to their own situation. Any group may request films4debate.wordpress.com for an appreciation session with this short documentary.
